Ruja Ignatova, the only woman in the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted Persons

A federal warrant was issued for her arrest in 2017 and she later fled, first to Sofia, Bulgaria, then to Athens, Greece. Her whereabouts since then are unknown, with the FBI Deputy Director pointing out “she has a lot of money and she got away pretty quickly.

Ruja Ignatova, who turns 42 today, is the only woman currently on the Top 10 most wanted list, and only the 11th woman to make the list in 72 years, as ABC explains. Earlier this year, she was put on Europol’s most wanted list.

The BBC explains that the FBI includes people on this list when they think the public may have information or help them find these fugitives. FBI Deputy Director Michael Driscoll said:It’s an important tool for us, the 10 list. We think the public is in a good position to help.

She has been accused since February 2018 of several things:

  • conspiracy to commit wire fraud,
  • electronic fraud,
  • conspiracy to launder money,
  • conspiracy to commit securities fraud,
  • securities fraud.

The FBI is offering up to $100,000 for information leading to Ignatova’s arrest. They point out that she has traveled extensively throughout Eastern Europe and may have altered her appearance through plastic surgery.
